BioTuf® Compostable Film Products

BioTuf® is a blend of carefully selected materials designed to completely degrade in industrial composting facilities. BioTuf® is a fully formulated resin system that can be easily converted into a film which is then used for waste bags or liners using standard blown film processing equipment. These bags allow the waste to be neatly and cleanly contained before being collected and sent to commercial composting operations. Diversion of food scraps, lawn and yard wastes and organics away from the typical land fill to a composting facility is an environmentally friendly solution, generating fewer green house gas emissions and allowing the organic wastes to be converted into a rich soil additive. The organic wastes contained in bags made with BioTuf® will all decompose together in the composting system where microorganisms attack the film along with the waste, leaving only natural residues behind like water, carbon dioxide and biomass. Sometimes trash can be a beautiful thing.

BioTuf® was designed to be run on conventional blown film lines and conversion equipment. Films up to 3.0 mils in thickness will completely degrade in commercial and municipal composting systems, and fully comply with the stringent requirements of ASTM D6400.

BioTuf® is a pelletized mineral-containing compound based on a blend of biodegradable resins, including an aliphatic/aromatic co-polyester. BioTuf® is certified by the BPI (Biodegradable Plastics Institute) for meeting the ASTM D6400 standard for compostable plastic.

Processing

BioTuf® operates using processing conditions similar to those used for LDPE. The melt temperature should be kept below 320° F (160° C) to maximize processing performance. A suggested barrel profile is 280°/290°/300°/300° F, with adapter & die temperatures between 300 – 320° F. BioTuf® will process on typical HWM-HDPE or LLDPE blown film lines. Extruded films may be sealed, printed, and converted using the same equipment used to process LDPE, LLDPE, or HMW-HDPE. Sealing temperatures should be in the range of those used when converting LDPE film of the same thickness. BioTuf® can be recycled and re-extruded similar to standard polyethylenes.
